“The team at the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) has worked with the Hawaii Health Information Exchange (HHIE) for the past eight years on various projects related to the transmission of critical health information from the provider community. HHIE has securely and efficiently transmitted reportable public health laboratory data from providers to the DOH since 2013. We have always found the HHIE to be an open and capable partner, willing to perform any necessary action to keep health information flowing to authorized recipients who have an essential role in improving health care in Hawaii. We continue to actively work with the HHIE on projects to increase access to COVID-19 electronic laboratory results as well as to enhance our Syndromic Surveillance program.”

Having access to clinically relevant information in the Community Health Record helps me care for my patients. It makes work easier for my staff to perform. It increases my patients’ confidence in the Hawai‘i healthcare system. This makes me happy.”

I’m hoping that the Community Health Record will continue to grow. Because as the system expands, physicians will come to realize it’s a much more efficient way to access health records and, because of this efficiency, saves time and money.

I can get all the labs I want for a complete diagnostic and clinical workup. If the patient has been hospitalized, I can get the discharge summary right at my fingertips. The CHR allows me to spend more time with my patients, and see more patients each week.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Hawaii Pathology Laboratory (HPL) reports are now available in HHIE Community Health Record. This will help my team in their pre-visit planning and close gaps in care. Less data mining and calling other offices for notes and reports. Look forward to additional data interfaces in the future.

The Hawaii Health Information Exchange’s HIPAA-compliant online network allows
patient medical records to be shared securely and in real time between doctors, hospitals,
and HMSA. We don’t have to waste time sending information by fax and can focus on coordinating
care for members with serious medical conditions.

This is particularly important during critical times for patient care such as hospitalizations and discharges.

Our communication and collaboration with our members, providers in hospitals, community-based
providers has greatly improved thanks to HHIE.

“I was consulting for an elderly gentleman in the Emergency Department
with signs of Cerebral Hemorrhage. His family says he was taking Pradaxa
(a blood thinner to prevent blood clots, e.g., to prevent stroke).
The brain scan confirmed that he was bleeding. I ordered antidote to Pradaxa to be
administered to stop the hemorrhage.”
“…meanwhile, I checked his medication history in the HHIE Community Health Record.
The HHIE information showed that he changed from Pradaxa to Xeralto a
few days earlier. The antidote I ordered for Praxada would not have helped!”
“I re-checked with another of his family member, and confirmed that he did
start taking Xeralto. I was able to change the order and gave him the antidote for
Xeralto to stop the hemorrhage.”
